I’ve become increasingly convinced that my children won’t be going through the same education system that I did. David Percell paints a picture of what that could look like.

Education is broken. Here is what the future of education will look like: 1. Teaching will become an extremely lucrative profession. Salaries will follow a power law. The best teachers will make millions of dollars per year and teach thousands of students per year.

2. Mass market courses will have Hollywood-level production budgets. People who teach subjects like finance, statistics, and economics will attract millions of students. Those students will give them the financial resources to invest in high-end graphics and production.

3. Subjects will cross-pollinate. Academia is fragmented. Departments are sorted into distinct subjects with very little over lap. But the Internet is multi-disciplinary by nature. Divisions between subjects will fade, leading to a new era of hyper-curious polymaths.

Heather Doshay who did doctoral research on salary negotiation and comp strategy at two distributed tech companies shares her thoughts on comp amidst a huge debate on the subject that was spurred by people sharing their comp openly.

The debate I’m seeing is about a single rate of pay for software engineers no matter where they live because they bring the same amount of “value”. Another fallacy. Engineers outearn every other function at most companies, and I’d argue all functions bring comparable “value”.

Software isn’t paid more because they bring more value, they’re paid more because they have a skill set that is more rare compared to the demand for it. If you’re going to argue for single rate, think about how the argument can be framed from a demand perspective.
